LAST weekend, Empangeni Country Club was the venue again when eight teams of nine players gathered to compete for the Bill Robarts Memorial Trophy.
The format of mixed fours, trips and pairs which has been adopted for this tournament has proved to be most successful and, more importantly, extremely popular with players and spectators.
After the preliminary rounds were completed on Saturday, the line-up for the semi-finals was Empangeni Bowling Club against Mtunzini while Richards Bay were drawn against Empangeni Country Club.

Semis
On Sunday morning, Bowling Club registered the only clean sweep of the tournament when they accounted for Mtunzini by three games to nil and Richards Bay, despite losing the fours, accounted for Country Club by winning the trips and pairs.
The stage was set and it must be said that Bowling Club, with eight district players in their line-up, started as favourites to retain the trophy they won last year.
But as they say, it’s a funny old game.
The pairs game saw the powerful Bowling Club combo of Yvonne Steenkamp and Mike Logan continue on their winning way when they recorded a 28-17 win over Richards Bay’s Grant Walters and Fairy Scheepers.
One up to the Bowling Club but it was soon to be all square when the trips side from the Bay, skipped by Terry Tebbutt and ably assisted by Rika Visser and Betsie du Plooy, maintained their unbeaten record in the tournament when they beat the Bowling Club’s James Rea, Jan Ferreira and Lesley Park by 17 shots to nine.
It was perhaps fitting that the final outcome of the tournament should hinge on the result of the fours face-off between Bowling Club’s Mike Kay-Hards, Wayne Johnston, Joop Busschers and Gloria Garbutt and the Bay’s Anette and Lukas Groenewald, Monty Clifton-Smith and Anita Scott.
Leading from the start, Richards Bay eventually won by 25 shots to 20 although it must be said that Bowling Club fought to the end.
Congratulations to the Richards Bay nine for a well-merited tournament victory.

Upcoming
This coming weekend the Empangeni Bowling Club will be hosting their annual men’s fours tournament.
