SEVEN people died
and seven were
injured when a
minibus taxi
collided head-on
with a bus outside
Hlabisa in the early
hours of Sunday
morning.
The accident
allegedly occurred
when the taxi, which
was returning from
Durban, swerved to
avoid a cow and
drove head on into
the bus.
KZN MEC for Safety
and Security and
Public Liaison,
Bheki Cele, and
Department of
Transport Head, Dr
Khosa Mbanjwa
hastened to
Ngwelezane Hospital
on Sunday morning to
commiserate with
injured survivors.
They were
accompanied by
Regional Commander
of the Road
Transport
Inspectorate, Themba
Zulu.
The seven who died
this morning are not
just people but
mothers and
children, said Cele.
Admitting that the
taxi may have been
speeding, Cele said
the Department of
Transport intended
to blitz traffic
offenders in the
Zululand area as
special operations
in Durban and
Pietermaritzburg had
been successful in
reducing road
deaths.
I am sick of coming
to Ngwelezane to see
injured people,
said Cele.
I sincerely hope
this is the last
time.
According to a
nursing sister, the
slightly injured
people who have been
sent home are
Basikelele Zulu,
Thuli Ndwandwe and
Nomusa Ntshangase.
The more seriously
injured are Thulani
Buthelezi, Ziningi
Nhleko, Mbongeni
Mhlongo and Beatrice
Hlabisa.
The names of the
deceased were not
available.
