Recruits move south

ABOUT 2000 recruits
of the
self-proclaimed SA
Unintegrated Forces
have been massing at
Amatikulu Sports
Grounds since the
weekend.
The large number of
men and women moved
from the border
areas near Pongola
where they were
camped out on a
sugar farm last
week.
KZN MEC for
Transport, Safety
and Security, Bheki
Cele said on
Wednesday morning
that the leaders of
the group had met
with the Minister of
Defence, Mosiuoa
Lekota on Tuesday.
‘A statement from
the National
Minister is
imminent,’ said Cele.
The group, claiming
to be former
military personnel,
first started
gathering in eShowe
and then made their
way in two groups by
buses to northern
Zululand, ostensibly
to cross the border
at Falazela (eManguze)
and Onverwacht (Pongola)
to set up military
training camps, as
they claimed they
were dissatisfied at
not being
incorporated into
the national defence
force.
The group is
believed to include
former APLA,
uMkhonto Wesizwe,
SANDF and Inkatha
SPU members, as well
as new recruits.
Of the first group
who went to eManguze,
nearly 400 were
arrested for an
illegal gathering
and appeared in
eManguze Court.
They were later all
released on bail of
R200 each.
The second group of
700 outside Pongola
were arrested last
week for trespassing
on private property.
They were taken to
Mkuze Police Station
and appeared for a
bail hearing in
Ubombo Court before
being released.
