The great white shark, scientific name Carcharodon carcharias, also known as the great white, white pointer, white shark, or white death, is a large lamniform shark found in coastal surface waters in all major oceans. Great White is a highly protective specie in South Africa and angling for Great White Sharks is prohibited under the act. However when an accidental hook up does occur the law makes provision for the handling of such a fish.
Species specific regulations applicable to recreational fishers
(4) Any fish caught in contravention of the provisions of the Act or the permit conditions must immediately be returned to the sea with as little injury as possible.
