Soweto Fashion Week
After the worldwide explosion of this prestigious event in 2012, Soweto Fashion week is Back at it again, this time with an international presence and combination of Las Vegas USA and Switzerland designers coming in to embellish our upcoming Sowetan and South African Designers in South Africa, Soweto Fashion week has plenty of new creations to introduce to the world of Fashion markets in 2013 and beyond.

They don’t call Soweto the ‘pulse of Jozi’ for nothing. This past weekend fashionistas were served the very first dose of Soweto Fashion Week and I had the opportunity to attend the show. The event took place at the Soweto Hotel, Walter Sisulu Square in Kliptown from May 24 to 26. It showcased some of Soweto’s up and coming designers and they wowed the crowd with their mix of trendy, funky and bold prints.
Entrepreneur Stephen Manzini who is the founder of the event says he saw a gap in the fashion industry and decided to help upcoming designers who did not have a platform to showcase their designs. The aim of the show was to give these young designers a platform to get their designs out there and to possibly build a customer base and open their stores in the near future. He says he believes that these young designers will one day be able to show their garments on international platforms. He also indicated that the show will be held annually and despite challenges such as lack of funding, they are planning to host other fashion shows starting with the summer collection in November this year and winter collection in May 2013. The fashion show was supported by InScape Design which gave one of the designers a half bursary for a Design and Construction course, The Make Up Issue sponsored make up for the show and models wore Jewellery from a jewellery company Gerpadissima and the Soweto Hotel sponsored the venue.
